Choose one conflict in The Hobbit, and explain how Tolkien uses it to move the story forward. Don't forget to cite page number when appropriate.

ANSWER: The conflict between Bilbo and Gullum is the character vs. character conflict. Bilbo was lost in the cave and while walking around to find his way out he comes to a little lake with a creature. They made a promise that if Bilbo didn't get the correct answer to Gollums riddle, Gollum could eat him. If Gollum didn't get the correct answer to Bilbos riddle, Gollum would show him the way out. After awhile Bilbo ran out of riddles. He put his hands in his pockets. He realized that it was a ring that he found while trying to find his way out. Bilbo then figured out that this ring was Gollums and it makes you turn invisible. Gollum realized that his ring was gone and Bilbo had it. Gollum was going after Bilbo. But when he was running he slipped on the ring and made him invisible. Gollum was in the way of the exit so Bilbo jump over him and he was free. Good conflict here. This was such a fun part. I love that he snapped the buttons off his jacket while squeezing out of the door! ~ Mrs. Best

Good job re-explaining this conflict Mary! This was my favorite too. I think you explained the important points in this part of the story. You mentioned everything in order and you didn't add unnecessary information. I like how you set this up. I think you could have added why Bilbo was in this cave just to say why he was there in just a little sentence. Also I think you should have added that Bilbo didn't have another riddle and when he put his hands in his pockets, he found the ring and said, "What's in my pockets?" And that just became Gollums riddle. Besides just those two things to add, I really liked your answer. I can tell you liked this part in the story. The author really puts this conflict in a fun way that makes you want to keeping. Good job Mary!!

In your own words, describe what happens next to Bilbo and the dwarves in the forest

Answer # 2

What happened next to Bilbo and the dwarves in the forest is after Bilbo and the dwarves escape the goblins, they think they are safe, but they weren't. When Bilbo and the dwarves are in the forest, they hear wolves coming. They quickly went up a tree, so the wolves can't get to them. The goblins were late meeting up with the wolves. after the goblins got there, they made a ring of fire on the ground. They couldnt come down from the tree because they would be set on fire or burned. Thank God the eagles came and help them. After the eagles saved them from the goblins and wolves. They flew them over the mountain. Bilbo and the dwarves were very lucky to have the eagals to rescued them.

~Who set the fire? What did they do to defend themselves before the eagles came? This is a little brief. ~ Mrs. Best

ANSWER # 3

Around two years ago I was visiting a friend at her cottage and her family decided that a fun thing to do was to go visit a bluff. They told me that they have been there before. I have never been to one and i wasn't quite sure what to expect. Once we arrived we started up the path. I was amazed at all the beautiful nature. Surrounded by big trees, with leaves on the ground. Then when we got up higher on the cliff I kept my distance from the edge, like they told me to. I have to admit that it was a little scary at some parts but most of it was very fun. The more I got used to it, the more comfortable I was. I was sad when they told us that it was time to go, but overall it was awesome and I would love to do it again. I think in a way I was like Bilbo because he was worried about his adventure with Gandalf and the dwarves, and he didn't know what to expect either. From this adventure I have learned that I its fun to explore new places. Even though Nobody was fighting dragons, it still was an adventure to me. ~ This was an adventure like Bilbo's: a little dangerous but surrounded by friends! Good connection! ~Mrs. Best

ANSWER #3

Yes, I think Thorin would have regretted hes greed because when you are dying you might feel bad or guilty about being greedy. I think Tolkien is trying to teach people that you shouldnt be greedy and even though we have nice expensive things it shouldnt matter because we you cant take them to heaven when you die. Like in Thorin's case, he died for the Arkenstone. ~ I agree with you, but this is too brief. ~Mrs. Best
